Girls Who Code.  Are you interested in solving problems with code and/or free summer programs for girls?  Girls Who Code meet today during lunch and after school from 4:45 to 5:45 in ATC Room 402.  Come join us for coding fun.

 

Looking to celebrate Black History Month? Ms. Close is hosting a 'Black History Movie Club' during lunch for the month of February in room 244. Come to watch & discuss films such as Selma and The Black Power Mixtape. 

 

PALS applications are due by this Thursday, Feb 13th to the box in Rm 245.  See Ms. Humberson in Rm 245 if you have questions!

Juniors:  Interested in becoming a doctor, nurse, or other health professional?  Apply to Anderson's Health Science Practicum Program for the 2020-2021 school year and spend two class periods shadowing at a clinic or hospital!  Application packets are available now outside Room 101, and Ms. Zumwalt is happy to answer any questions.  All applications are due Feb. 13!

The National Spanish Honor Society will be selling hand woven bracelets from The Pulsera Project through Feb. 13th.  This is a great idea for a Valentine’s day gift!  Look for us in the breezeways around the cafeteria. 

The Interact club is running a book drive and they are asking for donations of children's books either new or used.  There will be a collection box in room 241 where you can drop of books during lunch or the passing periods.  

 

If you want to sign up to make up hours this week we will be in room 248 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30-6:30. Please remember to sign up with Mrs. Salas in the registrars’ office to reserve a seat.

From the Latin Club: We have a mandatory meeting today during lunch at 12:50. We will be discussing important details about the tournament this weekend. As always, we will provide dessert!

KUDOS:  Congratulations to Anderson visual art students, Georgia O'Brien, Emma Berke, and Atittaya Senanok who participated in the Rodeo Austin Student Art Competition this past weekend.  Special congratulations go out to Georgia O'Brien whose work placed 6th among the 400 pieces of art in the competition and was sold in the auction. Her work was the only work from any AISD high school that placed in the competition.

Every single student who participated at Sprachfest this past Saturday qualified for the Texas State German Competition by placing in the top 5 in at least one category and therefor Anderson got 4th in Sweepstakes.  Congratulations

The varsity tennis team had a great tournament in San Antonio last weekend. Out of 32 teams, we had some great results.

BASEBALL NEWS:  If you are out and about tomorrow morning pop over to the AHS baseball field and check out the Baseball HIT-A-Thon silent auction from 9-1:00 pm.  A few items include:  iPad, Airpods and case, UT baseball and football tickets, Wendy Wells $100 GC and blue onyx necklace, soft Yeti bag, Yeti bucket, Bose speaker, ABG gift basket, Pilates on Kerbey 3 private sessions, LOTS of fun gift cards and so much more!  The Hit-A-Thon is the baseball booster club’s biggest fundraiser of the year.  We appreciate your support!

Thursday: “Today’s Healthy Heart Tip is “Eat Well.” Healthy foods are the fuel our bodies need to make new cells and provide energy for us to live well and fight diseases. When eating healthy, think of a rainbow. The more colorful the food is on a plate, the more vitamins and nutrients your body receives. When making your food decisions for the day, make sure that you consume healthy foods & drinks that will give your body what it needs for you to be successful.  Students and Staff are encouraged to enjoy a colorful heart-healthy salad from

the salad bar for lunch today. Let’s all remember to wear red tomorrow to celebrate National Wear Red Day!

Happy birthday to Mr. Guerra in the Foreign Language department!

KUDOS:  The Lady Trojan Basketball teams traveled to Lehman yesterday and all got victories. Varsity capped off the night with a 44 to 37 victory. Way to go Lady Trojans! 

Today is Football National Signing day and Anderson is proud of two athletes who signed at 10:00 today to play football at the college level!  Carsten Groos signed as a preferred walk-on at University of Oklahoma and Kameron Langford has signed at Western Missouri State University  Congrats, gentlemen - your hard work has paid off!

On Tuesday the boys’ soccer teams competed against Lehman and all three teams brought home wins 

JVB won 2-1, JVA won 2-0, and Varsity won 4-2!  Friday the Trojans take on Westlake at Westlake
Students and parents please come cheer on the Trojans at Westlake this Friday!  Varsity currently has 4 wins and 2 losses. 

Congratulations to the following swimmers who will be representing Anderson at the 2020 UIL State 6A Championship Meet in their individual events:  Sarah Rogillio, Lance Butler, Sam Parker, and two boys’ relay teams with
swimmers:  Alex Skowronski, Jasper Davis, Sam Parker, Lance Butler, Chase Broeckelmann, Thomas Woodley, Beau Player, and Diego Rivas Cardona.   Good Luck at State!

There’s not a prize that students are contending for, it’s all about pride. It's Wellness Wednesday this week! Let's start off the New Year 2020 with some snuggles from our furry therapy dog friends from Austin Dog Alliance in the South Courtyard during lunch on Wednesday! 

 

Monday: This week, we are celebrating Healthy Heart Week. Today’s healthy heart tip is “Get Active.” Your heart is a muscle, and, it gets stronger and healthier with daily physical activity. Participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day five times per week helps lower your risks for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Students can use PE Class, Athletics, or take a walk with your friends to be active and strengthen your hearts!  AISD is participating in the Statesman Cap10K April 5th, 2020. Staff interested in joining the Employee Only team can contact Stephanie Hawkins, AISD Employee Wellbeing Coordinator. Friday, we will participate in a districtwide Coordinated School Health Event. It is National Go Red Day; so, wear red Friday.

Today we remember Army Captain Michael Norman, class of 1989, who was killed in action in Iraq on this date in 2008.   To all of you who have or have had family members in the military, we thank you for their service.

SPENCER:  The deadline to apply to the Anderson International Baccalaureate program, as either an IB Diploma student, or for select IB courses "Certificate", is this Saturday, February 1st.  Apply by filling out the online application form:  https://forms.gle/rWTvsJChhbgofAN18   Two teacher recommendation forms are required, and can be picked up at the IB Office in the library.   Questions?  Go talk to the IB Coordinator - Jill Spencer.

FROM COACH BELL:  Want to participate in the newest UIL sport in the State of Texas?  Anderson Water Polo is beginning it’s 2020 season and we want you.  Please join us on Friday, January 31st at 7:00-9:00 at UT Swim Center for a preview night.  Jump in the water and try it out.  It is one of the fastest growing sports in Texas and Anderson has been playing for 7 years and participated in the State Tournament every year.  

 

We want to wish the Anderson Swim Team the best of luck as they will be competing in their Region 3-6A Championship meet in Mansfield, TX over the next two days.   At their past District 12-6A meet the girls team placed 4th overall and the boys team placed 2nd-tied with Lake Travis. Swim fast, swim smart, and have fun swimmers. Go Trojans!!!

 KUDOS:   Sophomore Kate Oliver and freshman Juliette Madere have been rock climbing on team ATX for several years.  Earlier this month they both qualified at Divisionals with a 6th place tie.   Divisionals includes competitors from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Arizona and Louisiana.    Both Kate and Juliette move on to Nationals in Oregon in a few weeks.   Rock climbing will be an Olympic sport this summer and we wish both of these young ladies good luck in their upcoming competitions!

KUDOS:  The girls Varsity soccer team remains undefeated in district play! Keep up the great work ladies. JV beat Akins on Saturday 6-0 and Varsity won 2-1. Come out this Tuesday night to support the Trojans as they face Austin High here at Anderson. JV plays at 6pm and V plays at 7:45pm. 

            Several Anderson Orchestra students competed at UIL solo and ensemble competition at Akins on Saturday.  Receiving Excellent ratings were:  Katie Fiel, cello, Harrison Eckel Violin, and Jessica Wang, violin.  Receiving Superior ratings were:  Audrey Long, viola, Kelvin Wang, violin, and Victor Mikhairov, Viola.  Receiving Superior ratings and advancing to state are:  Tony Nguyen, cello,  Anthony Lu, violin, and the string quartet of Sophia Nielson, violin,   Elana Lam,  violin, Eirene Jo, viola, and Mika Syms cello.  

 

From Latin Club: Please congratulate Anderson's Advanced Certamen Team (Nick Shields, Althea Lloren, Ben Jeffrey, and Katiana Soenen) as they won 2nd Place at the University of Texas Longhorn Latin Certamen Tournament this Saturday. They placed higher than any other Central Texas team and finished 2nd only to San Antonio-Clark, one of the top teams in the nation.

KUDOS:  Reflections Advancing EntriesThe district judging is now complete, and Anderson has two students whose work is advancing to the State level. This top recognition goes to:  Julia Kinzy for Music Composition and to Sara Valentine for Literature.   Congratulations ladies! 

Additional honors were awarded to:  Emma Pham/Award of Excellence in Visual Arts, Maya Padilla/Award of Merit in Photography, and Citlalli Quesada/Award of Merit in Dance

All five students are being recognized at an Awards Ceremony hosted by Austin Council PTA on February 9th.   Congratulations again! Next year’s Reflections program theme is “I Matter Because...”
